Sample Letter to San Antonio City Council

November 2004

Dear San Antonio City Councilmember,

Existing San Antonio coal plants are linked to 100 premature deaths and over 2,800 asthma attacks per year in our region. We need clean up of these plants and we don't need more dirty coal! Please press CPS for cleaner, more affordable options to the proposed billion dollar, 750 MW coal plant, including renewable energy like solar and wind power, and aggressive energy efficiency programs, Austin was able to avoid building a 500 MW coal plant with energy efficiency measures that led to cooler homes and businesses, and lower utility bills for consumers. San Antonio is a larger city, with more gains to be made through increased efficiency.

A new coal plant would add global warming gases to our air. San Antonio has already experienced problems with water quality and quantity. We don't need the drought, followed by torrential rains, that are the pattern with global warming.

Mercury is a known neurotoxin. The Deely/Spruce plants are already among the nation's Dirty Thirty for mercury, ranking 30th out of 476 plants nationwide. We don't want more mercury going into our waterways, contaminating fish and putting our children at risk for permanent brain damage. The 140 pounds of additional mercury the proposed plant would produce is unacceptable and unconscionable. We must protect our children's health and should be reducing mercury at existing plants, not adding to the pollution.

Protect our health and reduce dependence on coal that is imported from out of state, and move toward energy that doesn't have ongoing fuel costs. CPS is accountable to the citizens of San Antonio, and you are our voice. Urge CPS to halt its push for more dirty coal, and pursue renewable energy and an aggressive energy efficiency program for San Antonio instead. Thank you for your help.

Sincerely,
