Dear Congressman Henry Cuellar,

The proposed 750 MW coal plant for San Antonio is of great concern to our community, especially since additional toxic mercury and global warming gases this plant would be emitted.

Mercury contaminates our fish, and exposure through consumption of fish can lead to permanent brain damage in children and unborn babies. Delays in walking and talking, loss of IQ points, attention deficits and mental retardation are among the results of mercury exposure, and there are risks for adults who have cardiovascular problems.

The proposed plant would add an additional 140 pounds of mercury a year, and the existing coal plants are already ranked among the Dirty Thirty for mercury for the entire nation. We should be reducing mercury by 90% at all coal plants, not adding to the pollution.

The proposed plant would also release 6 million tons more carbon dioxide each year as well. Global warming puts San Antonio at risk, since it increases evaporation. Drought is typically followed by torrential rains, similar to what occurred here in the late 90's. Water quality and quantity is already of concern to us in San Antonio.

Energy efficiency measures for our homes and businesses are answer, and will bring cleaner air, more comfort and lower utility bills. With aggressive energy efficiency, combined with renewable energy, such as solar and wind power, we wouldn't need a new power plant. If the power plants pollute less, local businesses have room to grow. Our economy will benefit if San Antonio can more easily attain our health-based air quality goals.

Please urge CPS to pursue cleaner, more affordable energy instead of a polluting coal plant. Your sponsorship of legislation for power plant clean up and for renewable energy would be most appreciated.
