Congressman Joe Barton led the opposition to including a renewable electricity standard in the Energy bill conference committee that worked to resolve the differences between House and Senate bills. The Senate bill included a Renewable Electricity Standard (10% by 2020) and other clean energy provisions, while the House version provided billions of dollars in subsidies for harmful fossil fuel and nuclear industries and ignored clean energy solutions. Tell Congressman Barton that he disappointed Texans by opposing the Renewable Electricity Standard. His actions will hurt our economy and air quality, and hamper efforts for energy security.

Dear Congressman Barton,

Your opposition to inclusion of a 10 percent Renewable Electricity Standard in the energy bill hurts the Texas economy, and efforts for clean air as well as energy security. The standard would save consumers money, promote economic development, and reduce pollution. The Texas legislature understands the importance of renewable energy, and just passed a bill that nearly doubles the clean energy that will be produced. A national standard would do much more, and you have disappointed Texans by opposing measures that would do even more for our state.

In a report last month, the Energy Information Administration found that a 10 percent standard would provide consumers with cumulative electricity and natural gas bill savings of $22.6 billion by 2025 and reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 249 million metric tons. This report confirms the findings of a recent Union of Concerned Scientists study, Renewing America's Economy, which found that getting 10 percent of our energy from homegrown sources like the wind, sun, and crops would save consumers money on their energy bills and create 91,000 jobs by 2020.

Please use the future hearing you mentioned to hear from the rural communities who have already benefited greatly from renewable energy. A national standard would bring in $349 million in new property tax revenues, and save Texas consumers $4.7 billion in electricity costs by 2020, while building the clean energy industry here at home. Please reconsider your position and push for a Renewable Electricity Standard in the future.
